The Beyond Tech campaign aims to highlight the extraordinary members of RTC and all that they are outside of being a tech student! As part of our mission to empower our community, we would like to provide a platform to highlight all of the wonderful things that our members do outside of RTC.

“I believe everyone exists in multiple spaces, and it is the conjunction of those spaces that allows individuals to provide unique contributions. I am an actor, singer, and dancer as well as a programmer, tech researcher, and product manager. It is the intersection that makes me good at both.”

Q: How has being a [Thespian] impacted your life in a positive way?

A: Participating in theatre has allowed me to meet people from all walks of life, of every imaginable gender, race, sexual orientation, and ability level, and from all over the world. It has enhanced my ability to empathize with others and tell stories.

Q: What are you most proud of as it relates to your life beyond tech?

A: I am most proud of my participation in Seesaw Theatre, a group committed to producing original, multi-sensory theatre for autistic and otherwise disabled audiences. This group is a leader in the space of accessible theatre and theatre for young audiences (TYA). I have had the privilege of being involved in 8 productions in the capacity of either cast member, adventure guide, assistant director, or director.

Q: Does being who you are beyond tech impact your life in tech, or do you keep them separate?

A: Up until recently, I largely kept theatre and tech separate, occasionally seeing benefits from one cross over to the other, like when my final presentations at tech internships were repeatedly lauded. However, recently, I have found more areas of overlap. In tech, I discovered product management, which relies much more heavily than engineering on storytelling and communicative skills. In theatre, I am in the process of creating a show that is experienced virtually due to the pandemic.
